a free product sample to try in return for my honest review.
Have you ever had the experience when you were feeling really low and a sensory comfort lifted you momentarily?
When you are battling day-to-day living with depression, it’s the little things that can often make the biggest difference.
In recent months I’ve been struggling, really struggling with depression. Daily bouts of low energy, fatigue and brain fog were impacting on my ability to take care of myself. Completely overwhelmed, basic self-care tasks such as showering, spiraled down to an all time low.
At the time, I received a care package from the from the kind team at Scentered with a PR sample of aromatherapy balms to try. I was intrigued.
We’ve probably all heard about the benefits of aromatherapy, but when you are struggling with basic self-care this therapeutic comfort can feel it of reach.
If you’ve stumbled upon this post and you’re a little curious about how aromatherapy can be used as a comforting tool to self-soothe, read on.
In this post, I’m excited to share with you my honest review of the gorgeous Focus Aromatherapy Balm and how this wonderfully uplifting product has become my go-to tool for self-soothing depression.
Before I go ahead and give my review of the Scentered Aromatherapy Focus Balm, I want to point out that depression is a serious disease that can occur at any time, to anyone. While some people are able to manage and have functional days, others may struggle to function at all. Please if you are feeling unwell, seek immediate help and support. I’ve put together some helpful numbers here on the resources page

Self Soothing Depression With Scentered Focus Aromatherapy Balm
Opening my compact little tube Focus Aromatherapy Balm the subtle sweet scent ignites a sense of anticipation. I close my eyes and inhale fully, noticing the tones of fresh mint bursting through the familiar smell of rosemary. Letting out a long sigh, I open my eyes and detect the lingering sweetness of clary sage.
As a highly sensitive person (HSP) I am aware the scent is not at all overpowering, and I relax into the idea of actually trying out the balm.
The uplifting qualities of Focus Aromatherapy Balm can be felt the moment you unscrew the lid.
I gently dab the balm on my pulse points as suggested in the little guide that comes with the product. The action gives me an immediate sense of personal autonomy.
It feels good to experience the sensation of the balm on my skin. I marvel at how something so simple can make such a beneficial impact on my ailing mood. I notice how the combination of touch and scent seems to immediately calm my nervous system.
The smooth action of the balm gliding on my skin feels gorgeously nourishing. There’s no sticky residue and no visible trace of the product remains on the skin afterwards.
What does Self Soothing depression actually mean?
Self soothing is a term used to describe healthy actions we can take to soothe and calm ourselves during times of distress. It’s important to note that when you have depression self soothing is not a replacement for medication but a useful tool we can use alongside prescribed treatment.
Many of the nurturing tools used to provide self-soothing comfort are sensory. For example, we can wrap up in a warm, or weighted blanket and feel reassured by the sense of touch, warmth and security offered. In this post we’ll look at how Aromatherapy harnesses the power of scent to evoke a sense of deep comfort.
what is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is a holistic therapeutic practice using aromatic essential oils, which are infused with natural plant extracts. Essential oils can be work in many different ways and applications, such as in body creams, candles, heated in diffusers, placed in the bath or infused into bath oils and body balms.
The Science of the Gentle Mood Lifting Qualities of Aromatherpy
On their blog, Scentered describes how aromatherapy has long been used as a method of altering or enhancing our mood, by acting directly on the limbic system.
The limbic system is a small but very important part of the brain associated with memories and emotions. When you inhale essential oils, the tiny hairs inside your nostrils absorb the molecules and send a signal directly to the brain’s limbic system.
The uplifting formulation of Rosemary, Mint and Clary Sage Essential Oils within Focus Aromatherapy Balm have a stimulating affect upon the limbic system, helping to clear and invigorate the mind and concentration.
My Thoughts About Using Scentered Focus Aromatherapy Balm
Since receiving my Focus Aromatherapy Balm I’ve used it each morning to actively help me combat brain fog.
Having the balm on hand throughout the day helps me consciously face any feelings of frustration and overwhelm arising from automatic negative thoughts (ANT’s). I’m not suggesting that using the balm will magic brain fog away, but it does help me feel better equipped to meet the moments of confusion when they hit.
Instead of just administering the balm on the fly, the Scentered Mantra is to Stop — Inhale — and Reset. Instructions are included on a handy little information booklet that comes with the balm, indicating the beneficial pulse points to dab on the balm.
Why I use, love and recommend Focus Aromatherapy Balm
Some of the things I particularly LOVE about this sweet little balm are:
- Scentered is a mindful lifestyle brand that aims to teach us how to use the power of our senses to direct our thoughts, emotions and actions on a journey towards greater self-love and mental well-being.
- Reassuringly, Scentered Aromatherapy Balms are 100% natural, essential oil based balms.
- Another thing I love about this brand is their commitment to sustainability and minimizing their carbon footprint.
- I love the convenient size and aesthetic of their packaging is so thoughtfully inspired (when you replace the lid you can intentionally line up the word “scentered“).

- They do refills (on both their candles and balms). Passionate about minimizing their waste at every level, Scentered packaging is designed to align with the brand’s Re-use, Re-Purpose or Recycle mantra.
Brave Insight
Now that you’ve read about how you can soothe and comfort yourself through a bout of depression, why not try it for yourself. Take one deep, full inhalation and exhale deeply.
As you focus on relaxing into your breath, gradually become aware of your senses and think of one thing you can do right now to nourish and soothe yourself.
Maybe you could go outside and breathe in the fresh aliveness of Nature. Or perhaps you could splash some water over your face, or awaken the sense of touch with some nourishing hand cream.
The most intriguing aspect of the Scentered range of aromatherapy balms, for me, is the idea of creating a Wellness Ritual while using aromatherapy. Check out the video below to see what I mean:
